For decades, Gibsonton served as a winter residence and place of retirement for carnival and circus alumni, earning its nickname of Showtown. The Florida town pays homage to some of its most notable citi ens, including Al Tomaini, a 7ft 11in circus giant for whom a colossal statue of a boot is on display. Still catering to the circus community, the town allows locals to leave trailers and elephants on the lawn. Gibsonton is also home to the International Independent Showmen’s Association, a not-for-profit organisation that manages the Museum of the American Carnival. (Bob Snead)
