New Norwegian Cruise Line ship floated out in Germany

Norwegian Cruise Line’s next ship, the Norwegian Breakaway, has taken to the water for the first time.

The Miami-based line says the 4,028-passenger vessel was “floated out” today from a covered dry dock at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, one of the last major milestones before the vessel’s debut in late April.

The initial stages of a cruise ship’s construction take place in a dry dock facility. Once exterior outfitting is completed, the dry dock is flooded and the ship is floated to a wet dock facility where construction continues.

The 146,600-ton Norwegian Breakaway is the largest cruise ship ever built in Germany and has been under construction at the Meyer Werft shipyard since September 2011. The vessel will feature a sprawling, deck-top fun zone with five major water slides; a first-of-its-kind restaurant-lined boardwalk; large production shows including Broadway’s Rock of Ages; and a giant, two-deck spa. New York artist Peter Max created the ship’s hull art.

Norwegian Breakaway is scheduled to sail year-round out of New York City, becoming the largest cruise vessel ever to do so. The ship will operate seven-night sailings to Bermuda starting at $749 per person; seven-night sailings to the Bahamas and Florida starting at $599 per person; and 12-night sailings to the Southern Caribbean starting at $1,299 per person.

The Norwegian Breakaway and a sister ship due in 2014, the Norwegian Getaway, were named by a USA TODAY reader in 2011 in a contest held here at usatoday.com.
