Making tracks: This ski season is living up to expectations
Snow is falling across the Alps. This weekend is the start of the busiest part of the season, and with half-term approaching, conditions are looking good.
FRANCE
Great skiing everywhere, with a return to powder over the weekend. It’s also got much colder. In Tignes, the mercury could drop to minus 18c.
Snow depths remain excellent at altitude and there will be welcome improvements in the lower resorts.
Vaujany has almost a metre in the village and twice that on top. Flaine has 330cm, with more on the way. Meribel and Val d’Isere are at their
best for the time of year.
SWITZERLAND
Conditions are similar to those in France. Andermatt has up to 400cm of settled snow, while Verbier has 80cm at village level and 225cm up at Mont-Fort.
AUSTRIA
In Kitzbuhel, there’s 40cm in town and 140cm on the Horn. But this should change over the weekend with prolonged snow forecast and a welcome drop in temperature to minus 4c on Saturday.
High-altitude Obergurgl has a metre in the village and twice as much on the glacier. St Anton has a
respectable 60cm to 170cm.
ITALY
In the Dolomites, Selva Gardena has half a metre and 145cm on the higher slopes of the Sella Ronda. In Cervinia, there’s a couple of metres on the Swiss frontier and the long run back to the resort is in great shape, with more snow expected.
ANDORRA
Across the Pyrenees it’s been an extraordinary few weeks with spectacular snowfalls. A thaw has
arrived, but it is going to take a lot of sunshine to make unwelcome inroads. Pas de la Casa and Soldeu have 80cm at village level and 180cm on the higher slopes. Baqueira Beret in the Spanish
Pyrenees has a record 200cm in resort and 340cm at the top lift.
