REI Overnighter Pack for traveling light

My friend Kai, a go-light en master, somehow uses REI’s Overnighter Pack for multi-week escapes to Mexico and Europe. For most of us, though, it’s a good choice for long weekends in the Carmel Valley or holiday overnights at Mom’s. A shrunken version of a convertible carry-on pack, it’s spare and functional, with well-thought-out design features like diagonal organi er pockets. However you set down the pack, the pockets are at least partially right side up. The Overnighter comes with hideaway shoulder straps, a shoulder-sling strap and luggage handles.

What we liked: The stiff sides and neon-green lining made it easy to find small items inside.

Not so much: For most of us, the pack is just too small for trips of more than a few days. Note to REI: Expand this to full carry-on si e and you’ve got a real winner.

Vitals: Overnighter Pack, $89.50 from REI retail stores and rei.com.
