Stones of the Scottish isles

With crumpled layers as old as time, the sea stacks and cliffs of the Hebrides islands off Scotland’s west coast are jagged reminders of the tectonic shifts that forced Europe, North America and Greenland apart 60 million years ago. Fought over for centuries by the Celts and Vikings and the English and Scots, humans have long struggled to survive in this isolated part of the world. Although only a few do en of the more than 500 islands are inhabited today, the impressive archipelago is a draw for travellers for its caves, sea stacks and basalt pinnacles.
