A QANTAS flight travelling from Brisbane to Townsville has been diverted to Rockhampton this afternoon.
The flight, QF974 on a Boeing 737-800, was set to land in Townsville about 3.50pm but landed in Rockhampton 20 minutes earlier after crews noticed problems with the cabin pressure.
A spokesman from Australian Transport Safety Bureau said “depressurisation of the cabin” forced the emergency landing of QF974.
“Qantas flight 974, Brisbane for Townsville, experienced depressurisation of the cabin en route to Townsville,” he said.
“They descended to a safe altitude of 10,000 feet, which is a normal procedure, and diverted to Rockhampton.
“There can be many technical reasons for a loss of cabin pressure.
“We will indeed be chasing that up.

“We will be getting a report from the operator once they’ve had a look at the aircraft and that will happen in due course.”
A Qantas spokeswoman released a statement about 5.30pm.
“During the flight the crew detected that the aircraft was not maintaining its normal cabin pressure,” she said in a statement.
“In line with standard procedure, the Captain initiated a descent to 10,000 feet.”
The spokeswoman said the aircraft landed safely in Rockhampton about 3.30pm and engineers were examining the aircraft.
The plane is understood to have a capacity of about 150 people.
A replacement aircraft had been sent to take the passengers to Townsville. It is understood the plane is scheduled to arrive in Townsville about 9.30pm with the same flight code.
“Passengers were calm throughout the descent and there were no reports of anyone on board, including crew, suffering any adverse effects,” the spokeswoman said.
“Qantas has reported this incident to CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) and the ATSB (Australian Transport Safety Bureau), and will work with Boeing to investigate the cause.”
