Landmark
Washington, D.C.: The 17-month-old Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the National Mall will lose its inscription “I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness,” a controversial paraphrase of the civil rights leader’s remarks, in February or March. Wavy lines will replace it on the stone sculpture. www.nps.gov/mlkm.
Trekking
Nepal: Help disadvantaged rural Nepali women learn to be trekking guides on a Meaningful Trip, which raises funds for training and a children’s school. All-women and mixed-gender tours for novice and advanced hikers include five- and 10-day treks, starting at $1,895. www.meaningfultrip.com.
Travel resource
South Africa: Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa, which promotes ethical business and environmental practices, lists 64 certified operators, from Soweto Hotel Conference Centre (pictured) to the newly added De Zeekoe Guest Farm in Oudtshoorn and Kwalata Game Ranch in Gauteng. www.fairtourismsa.org.za.
Holiday
Bolivia: Honoring ethnic diversity, the country’s 2009 Constitution renamed the former republic the “Plurinational State of Bolivia” as of Jan. 22, 2010; the date is now a public holiday. Another sign of diversity: 37 official languages, of which Spanish, Aymara and Quechua are the most widely spoken. www.bolivia-usa.org.
