In our shrinking economy, it is rare to hear news of a company growing its business.

But budget hotel chain Travelodge has bucked the trend of the current bleak financial figures by announcing an expansion programme that will see the creation of 420 jobs – as well as the launching of 14 new hotels in Spain and the UK.

On the up: Travelodge has announced an ambitious expansion programme in the UK and Spain

Twelve new hotels will open in Britain at various stages of 2013.

Four of these will be dotted across London – in Bethnal Green (in the east of the city), Hounslow (the west), Vauxhall (the south-west) and Walthamstow (the north-east).

A further eight properties will welcome guests in the next few months – in Liverpool, Cambridge, Aylesbury, Southport, Kings Lynn, Sittingbourne, Manchester and Chertsey.

The two Spanish hotel openings will increase Travelodge’s presence in Spain’s two most celebrated cities – one in the Julian Camarillo district of Madrid, on the east side of the capital; another in the beachfront El Poblenoul district of Barcelona.

The company already has four Spanish hotels (two in Madrid, one in Barcelona, one in Valencia).

In total, the expansion will see an investment of £223million – with £57million of this amount being spent on the refurbishment of existing Travelodge hotels.

‘This capital expenditure will help us to grow our business, strengthen our product offering and make Travelodge the best value chain in the UK,’ says Grant Hearn, CEO of Travelodge.

‘In today’s world, Britons are looking for value when making a hotel booking.

‘The UK remains a growing market for branded budget accommodation, as it is still well behind matured markets such as the USA and France.’
