The long banquet tables under circus tent canvas create a social atmosphere that’s hard to top. Amazing food is plonked down, along with the vino and you all get stuck in as impromptu music and theatre acts break out inside and outside the tent. You roll out in incredible spirits and more than ready to get stuck in to the festival
This year Polpo’s Russell Norman, Yotam Ottolenghi and Mark Hix will each be holding their own banquet
These beautiful young ladies provided the live music last year during the lunchtime banquet
Wilderness,
set among the rolling Cotswolds hills, is the foodiest, most
family-friendly UK festival of them all, where three of London’s most
popular chefs share top billing with the headline music acts to ensure
no-one has to stomach a greasy burger.
Staged
within Lord and Lady Rotherwick’s Cornbury Deer Park which includes
1,700 acres of the most ancient forest in Britain today, the festival
attracts arty types, foodies, hippies, families with young children and
lovers of the great outdoors.
Mediterranean chef Ottolenghi will for a second year be serving a three-course vegetarian feast in the sumptuous banqueting tent
One of the most influential chefs in London, Russell Norman will be serving up dishes from the back streets of Venice
Wilderness will be the perfect backdrop for restaurateur Mark Hix’s known for his British style and seasonal dishes

What
sets it apart from every other festival are the lavish banquet lunch
and dinners served up by celebrity chefs to hundreds of people on long
communal tables in huge circus tents.
Opening the banquet tent on August,
Friday 9th, Israeli-chef Yotam Ottolenghi promises to bring a touch of
the Mediterranean to Wilderness with his roast chicken with sumac, za’atar and
lemon, marinated rack of lamb with coriander honey and grilled
mackerel with green olive, celery and raisin salsa.
He said: ‘I am delighted to be returning
to Wilderness for a second year. Last year was an incredible weekend and
so much fun – we loved creating an Ottolenghi banquet in such a
beautiful setting.’
Russell Norman of London’s Polpo, a Soho restaurant inspired by dishes from the back streets of Venice, takes over on the Saturday with a three-course Venetian-themed lunchtime banquet that includes grilled lamb and salsa verde, heritage tomato panzanella and runner beans with red onion and pecorino for mains.
He said: ‘Polpo will be staging a Venetian themed banquet at Wilderness this year and we couldn’t be more excited.
‘We’ll be putting on a multi-course
feast of Polpo classics and tasty Venetian sharing plates, all washed
down with lashings of Prosecco.’
The beautiful lake and waterfall provide the perfect opportunity to cool off, sunbathe and sip cocktails before heading back up to the staged-areas for music and dancing
Yes, the water is clean and fine for swimming in!
The lakeside spa was a highlight of last year’s festival and promises to be even bigger this year. Cocktail in the hot tub?
WHO’S PLAYING?
Empire of The Sun, Noah and the Whale, Rodriguez, Martha Wainwright, Michael Kiwanuka, Tom Odell, Sam Lee, Ghostpoet, Tribes, The Bees, London Grammar, Matt Corby, Lucy Rose, King Krule, Melody’s Echo Chamber, Eliza and the Bear, plus The London Folk Guild and Yellow Lounge
On
Sunday, Mark Hix, of London’s Hix
Oyster Chop House lays on a roast with Moyallon pork crackling and
Bramley apple sauce, Jellied ham hock with piccalilli and Tramshed
chicken with baked garlic sauce stuffing among the offerings.
Exmouth Market’s
famous Moro will be cooking up a storm in their
Souk dining tent, while Thyme Cookery School also returns to the festival,
giving budding chefs the chance to whip up something special in their
on-site kitchen, plus they’ll be hosting a series of talks and tastings
across the weekend.
Tim Harvey, Wilderness Festival organiser says: ‘We are hugely excited
to be announcing some of the UK’s finest restaurateurs to headline
Wilderness’ food offering.
‘We truly believe we have one of the strongest
food line-ups around and the perfect gastronomic experience for any
foodies out there.’
The musical line-up includes Rodriguez, the legendary Detroit troubadour otherwise known as Sugarman, who
has rocketed to notoriety following the BAFTA- and Oscar-winning
documentary about his life, Searching for Sugarman.
Impromptu acts forever break out, ensuring that there is never a dull moment at Wilderness
Wilderness is a family festival that hosts children’s workshops and performances from House of Fairy Tales, Charles Dickens Museum, Witchwood School of Rock and Hullabalo Arts
You wander around Wilderness never knowing what to expect next as actors and singers mingle with the crowd before breaking out into song and dance
Plenty to do at Wilderness, whether it be boating or swimming in the lake, to cookery classes from the experts
Arts and crafts workshops ensure children are entertained as well as parents
The
documentary charts his promising rise in the U.S. before disappearing
off the music scene amid rumours of an onstage suicide.
Although he never quite lived up to
expectation in the U.S., his music struck a chord in South Africa where
he became more listened to than Elvis and inspired two fans to find out
exactly what happened to him.
The documentary reveals that he didn’t commit suicide and succeeds in tracking him down and helping to relaunch his career.
Rodriguez said: ‘It is an honour and pleasure to be included to perform at this year’s
Wilderness. I am told that it is at a beautiful location, so we are
definitely looking forward to the scene.’
Australian electronic music duo from Sydney, Empire of the Sun, will also be taking to the stage for a UK festival
exclusive at Wilderness with their customary flamboyant costumes, fantasy stage sets
and feathered headwear in what promises to be an unforgettable
experience.
Following the band’s recent announcement of a new album and
film, directed by frontman Charlie Fink, Noah and the Whale will close
the main stage on Sunday.
This year’s big acts include Empire of the Sun, Rodriguez and Martha Wainright
Parties are organised by producers of Secret Garden Party and this year will include a Bacchanalian masked ball with performances from The Artful Badger, Feast Of Fools and DJ sets from The Correspondents, Psychemagik, and Future Boogie

include Martha Wainwright, Brit Award winner Tom Odell, Michael
Kiwanuka, Matt Corby, Ghostpoet, Tribes, King Krule, Melody’s Echo
Chamber, Lucy Rose, Eliza and the Bear and London Folk Guild.
Festival organisers Mr Harvey added: ‘As festival organisers, Wilderness is still the mouth-watering prospect
it’s always been.
‘It’s a festival of experiences entirely shaped by the
landscape of Cornbury and the surrounding Wychwood Forest.
‘Each and
every one of the amazing shows and happenings have been inspired by the
lakes, valleys, copses and rides of our majestic home.
‘From this year’s
exquisite banqueting concepts to the epic theatrical shows we are
bringing over from mainland France, it will be a weekend of both
electrifying entertainments and restful escape.’
