Delightful: Copenhagen’s impressive Tivoli Gardens are worth the trip

QUESTION: We would really like to visit the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen this year as we’ve been told that it’s great for kids. However, we’d also like to explore more of Denmark while we are there. Any suggestions? Sally, by email

ANSWER: There is an overnight service from Harwich to Esbjerg with DFDS Seaways – it’s the only ferry route to Denmark from the UK. If you take your own car you can head to Copenhagen but also have the freedom to explore the country without the added cost of hiring a vehicle. Other places of interest en route include Denmark’s oldest town Ribe, the cultural city of Odense (it’s the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen), and the lovely town of Vejle, which has great shops and a beach.

DFDS Seaways (0871 522 9976, dfds.co.uk) is offering a special offer on this route – prices start from £76 per person one-way based on a car and four people sharing an en suite cabin. There’s also a kids’ club, three restaurants and a bar with live entertainment on board.

QUESTION: Any suggestions for an inexpensive UK holiday this year? We would prefer to stay in a modern hotel rather than a BB and we’re particularly keen on the Lake District. Barry, by email

ANSWER: As part of an ‘Enjoy Great Britain’ promotion, Travelodge (travelodge.co.uk) is offering 200,000 rooms for between £19 and £21. The rooms are available at 510 locations for stays between July 1 and September 30, 2013.

If you’re keen on the Lake District there are Travelodges in Kendal, Cockermouth and Barrow-in-Furness. A family room includes a king-size bed, sofa bed, en suite facilities, a flatscreen TV, free tea and coffee-making facilities and wi-fi.

QUESTION: My wife is due to retire shortly and would love to go on a European river cruise. She has often mentioned travelling along the Rhine. While it would be nice to say that money is no object, we’re on a fixed budget. Are there any good deals on offer? Bryan, by email

ANSWER: Shearings Holidays (0844 209 7143, shearings.com) is presently offering its German and Swiss Rhine river cruises from just £699 per person. The price includes seven nights’ full-board accommodation on the MPS Rotterdam and return coach travel.

Highlights of the trip include visits to Breisach, Strasbourg, the old town of Basel and Rudesheim’s wine country. Departures are available in July and August.
