While largely unknown outside Louisiana, Bayou St. John was once the main port and commercial waterway for New Orleans. The city’s founders put the city where it is because of Bayou St. John and it’s access to Lake Pontchartrain. These days, the Bayou is mostly ornamental, a picturesque bit of flat water for kayaking through parts of the city that few tourists ever see.
